Support the Equal Participation in Schools Bill 2016

The Equal Participation in Schools Bill 2016 will be debated in the Dail next Tuesday night between 8pm and 10pm. If passed this Bill would ensure that all children and their parents have access to an education system with equal respect and dignity and where their human rights are guaranteed. Please give your support to this Bill by contacting your local TDs and ask them to support it. You can access the Bill here

The Bill is to be welcomed as it seeks to remove religious discrimination in access to schools and also religious discrimination within schools. Religious discrimination within schools is a huge issue and Atheist Ireland gets more complaints about this than about access to schools.

The Bill is a reflection of the Recommendations of the Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission, The various Committees at the United Nations and also the Council of Europe.  This Bill would ensure that all Ireland’s human rights obligations are reflected in law.

Here is a  video of Ruth Coppinger introducing the Bill at first stage last year.

The Bill will be debated in Solidarity’s private members time on Tuesday and if TDs are  serious about equality and inclusion in our education system they will support it.

Please contact your local TD and ask them to support this Bill as it is the best chance of securing an education system that protects the rights of all children and their parents.
