Submission to National Council for Curriculum and Assessment

The National Council of Curriculum and Assessment are seeking submissions (in 100 words or less) on the priorities for the Primary curriculum. http://www.ncca.biz/children/hav.htm

Here is the Submission from Atheist Ireland:-

The curriculum disrespects the philosophical convictions of parents who seek secular education for their children. The European Convention obliges the state to respect the right of parents to ensure their children’s education is “in conformity with their own religious and philosophical convictions”. The ECHR says the secular viewpoint is worthy of respect in a democratic society, and must be regarded as a “philosophical conviction” within the Convention’s meaning. Also, the curriculum should ensure that all children receive a basic moral education (as guaranteed by Article 42.3.2 of the Constitution), independently of religious education (from which children may opt out).
